Hebei GEO University (HGU) is situated in the city of Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province, China. Hebei, whose one-character abbreviation is “冀” (jì), is known as “The Land of Yan-Zhao”, for most of its area belonged to Zhao and Yan in the Warring States period. With an area of 188,800 square kilometers, Hebei is located between 113°04’E-119°53’E and 36°01’N-42°37’N in the north of China, embracing Beijing and Tianjin, with Bohai Sea to the east.
Located in the southwest of Hebei Province and the Circum-Bohai Sea Economic Zone, Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital, is one of the major production areas of grain, vegetable, meat, egg, and fruit, identified as the country’s high-quality wheat production base and known as “The Barn of North China”. It is also called “The Cradle of New China”, for Chainman Mao directed the three significant battles in Pingshan County.
Hebei GEO University, previously named Shijiazhuang University of Economics, was established originally in 1953 as one of the five universities affiliated to the Ministry of Geology, and is now co-sponsored by the Ministry of Land and Resources and Hebei Province. Its honorary president is Li Tingdong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
At the beginning of its establishment, the university is nationally well-known for the interdisciplinary feature of geology and economic management. At present, HGU covers 7 discipline fields, i.e., science, engineering, management, economics, law, literature, and art, and owns 53 undergraduate programs, among which there are 4 national characteristic programs, 4 national and provincial comprehensive reform pilot programs, 4 undergraduate education innovation highlands of Hebei Province, and 8 brand featured programs of Hebei Province universities. The university enrolls students from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China, with a total of 14,000 full-time students, including postgraduates and undergraduates.
HGU has a total of 921 full-time teachers, among whom 47% have advanced professional titles and 88% own doctoral or master’s degree. 75 teachers have received such honors as winner of Li Siguang Geological Science Award, expert enjoying government special allowance, outstanding expert of the province,middle-aged and young experts with outstanding contributionof the province, excellent young expert in social sciences of the province, outstanding young talent of the province, famous teacher of the province, etc. Additionally, the university has employed 180 part-time and guest professors, among whom there are 10 academicians.
HGU is an ideal place for learning, research and practice with the following resources and infrastructure: a library holding 1.5 million books, over 1400 different journals in paper, and 190,000 electronic books; 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers of geosciences and economic management, 5 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers of water resource environment, jewelry and mineral processing, etc., and 104 practice and training bases of various levels;Earth ScienceMuseum and Numismatic Museum. TheEarth ScienceMuseum is thepopular science education base and quality education base of China, Hebei, and Shijiazhuang.
Currently, HGU is engaged in deepening the cultivation mode and curriculum and teaching reform, strengthening innovation and entrepreneurship education, and encouraging students to develop competence of autonomous learning and scientific research. Over the past 5 years, undergraduates have completed more than 590 research projects and published more than 580 research papers; they have won 249 national awards and 514 provincial awards in such competitions as the national college student Chuang Qingchun business plan competition, Challenge Cup extracurricular science and technology contest, mathematical modeling, advertisement art contest, humanities knowledge contest, English contest, climbing competition, and football match. There are over a hundred students winning national and provincial honorary titles every year. Tang Jianzhe, elected as one of the 2012 National College Students’ Annual Figures, was received by President Xi Jinping. The graduate employment rate reaches 100%, and the undergraduate employment rate above 97%.
In the past five years, the university has made great achievements in teaching and research: 1 national science and technology progress award and 4 national teaching achievement awards; 9 provincial key disciplines and provincial key development disciplines; 6 provincial/ministry-level research bases, such as Hebei Province Mineral Resources Strategy and Management Research Base, Hebei Province Water Resources Sustainable Utilization and Industrial Structure Optimization Collaborative Innovation Center; over 130 specialized laboratories on sustainable utilization and development of water resources, photoelectric information and earth exploration technology, etc.
HGU has establishedcooperative relationship with more than 20 universities from UK, USA, Canada, German, Russia, Australia, France, South Korea, etc. in multiple forms, such as student exchange, mutual recognition of credits, joint degree awarding, research cooperation, etc.
Over the past 60 years, more than 100,000 students have graduated from our university. Representative of the outstanding graduates areXu Deming, former Vice Minister of Ministry of Land and Resources, Wu Qiang, academician of China Academy of Engineering, Li Yuansheng and Wu Genshui, leaders of Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition Team, Hu Jun, president of Jinan University, Zhang Hong, winner ofLi Siguang Geological Science Award, and Zhao Ziliang, CEO of Hunxia Life Insurance Co., Ltd.
The construction and development of HGU has received the kind care and great support from the leaders at all levels. Many party and state leaders, such as Mao Zedong, Hu Jintao, Xi Jinping, etc., have met with the teachers and students of the university. Wen Jiabao, former Premier of China, has donated personally-collected rock samples and his new bookGeological Hand Notes of Wen Jiabaoto encourage our teachers and students to carry forward the spirit of “Diligence, Practicality and Creativity” and make new contributions to the construction of China.
Looking back upon the past, along with the construction and development of the People’s Republic of China, several generations of HGU people have spare no efforts in developing the university. Looking ahead to the future, the teachers and students of HGU will continue to carry forward its long-standing legacy of diligence, solidarity and creativity to build the university into a nationally well-known, distinctive and innovative multidisciplinary university!
